Guide
Beaches of Sifnos
Sifnos has sand and pebble in roughly equal measure, and the wind decides a lot. This is how the main beaches differ and what each one needs from you.
The main sandy beaches
- Platis Gialos
- The longest sandy beach, fully organised, with tavernas and rooms along the front. Bus route. Exposed to the south.
- Kamares
- The port beach: sandy, shallow and calm, walkable from ferries and rooms.
- Vathi
- A sheltered sandy bay, shallow and calm, the usual choice with small children.
- Faros
- Several small coves close together, partly organised, easy to reach and good for a half day.
Quieter and harder to reach
- Chrysopigi
- Pebble and rock beside the monastery on the headland. Striking rather than comfortable.
- Fykiada
- Reached on foot, no facilities. Bring water and shade.
- Vroulidia
- Small, southern and quiet, with a walk down from the road.
- Herronisos
- The far north, a long drive on a narrow road, with fishing tavernas at the end of it.
Practical notes
- The meltemi blows from the north in summer, so south-facing beaches are usually calmer in wind.
- Only the main beaches have sunbed hire and food; assume nothing at the smaller coves.
- Several beaches are reachable by bus in season; the rest need a car, a scooter, or a walk.
- Shade is limited almost everywhere apart from the tamarisk trees at Platis Gialos and Vathi.
